Many of you have expressed interest in woodworking career opportunities. See the Course list for the next available class.. Comprehensive Ten-week Course in Woodworking - that's specifically designed to prepare students for an entry-level woodworking position. We also plan on offering job placement assistance for our students. This course will be taught by several Homestead Woodworking School instructors, including Andy Motter, Jon Siegel, and Robert LaCivita, as well as quest instructors that will include Bengamin Barrett, owner of Berkshire Veneer Company; Jack Carr, owner of Black Mountain Wood Company; Bruce Hamilton, a master refinisher and restoration expert; and Brian Sargent, a full-time furniture maker whos work has been shown in juried shows and at the Currier Gallery of Art. The course will begin with the study of wood, as well as the proper use, care and sharpening of hand tools. Students will complete three projects, the first two of which will be the same for everyone. The first project will focus on using hand tools. The next one will incorporate the use of woodworking machines and joinery. Finally, the third project will give each stuednt an opportunity to design, build and finish a unique "portfolio piece." They'll create detailed drawings showing joinery details, and then build their project to those drawings. We'll cover a variety of topics in this course, including furniture design, drawing working plans, wood identification, use of hand tools, sharpening, machine use and maintenance, joinery, wood turning, wood bending, veneering and finishing.
